The Existence of Dark Matter

Many scientists are involved in research on dark matter. All of the studies that have been done are speculative rather than experimental, because scientists have only been able to theorize its existence from conclusions derived from other studies of the universe. Many are convinced that it exists, but as yet, have been unable to confirm its existence, and capture it in order to experiment on it. It is believed by many scientists that only a small percentage of the universe is normal matter, perhaps 4-5%. The rest of the universe is believed to be made up of dark matter (20-21%) and the rest to be dark energy (75%).

Before I read about dark matter and dark energy, I had believed, as most people believe, that darkness was not a substance, but the absence of light. Then I read a passage in Isaiah 45:7 where the Lord is asserting His preeminence in the universe from creation to His personal involvement with His people Israel. The passage reads, “I form the light, and create darkness.” The passage really got my attention, because I had never thought of darkness as something that God had created as He had done with light. After meditating on what this passage could possibly mean, I relegated my thoughts on the topic of darkness to the category of the unknowable things about God. I simply believed that the passage meant what it said, but that I did not know what it meant. Then I came across several scientific periodicals that had articles on the topic of darkness, and it’s place in the universe as dark matter and dark energy.

Now my interest in the subject was growing. My thoughts ran from the idea that God had written about something that He had created and called darkness before the scientists even knew that it existed, to ideas as to how darkness which God claimed to have created, in the passage in Isaiah, was related to what the scientists were talking about. I had gone from thinking of darkness as an intangible concept to the possibility of darkness actually being a substance, that scientists were theorizing as existing in the universe. This was quite a lot to think about at the same time, then I came across a Bible school story that my child had brought home from church about the ten plagues that God had send upon Egypt during Israel’s time of slavery there. I came to the story in Exodus regarding the 9th plague, and was totally unprepared for what I read. The 10 plagues were not new to me. I had read about them before, many times; but the 9th plague had not even gotten my attention enough to remember it as a plague, Others may have a better memory, and recall the plague of darkness. As I read it, my interest grew substantial. The account of this plague is given in Exodus 10 beginning with verse 21. The darkness as described in this passage is described as something that can be felt, was thick, and prevented any of the Egyptians from seeing each other, nor being able to arise from where they were sitting for three days. It was pointed out that this darkness did not affect the Israelites, because they were said to have light in their dwellings.

Relative to the rest of this study, the passage in Exodus raises a lot of interesting questions, of which I will present a few: 1. Is the darkness mentioned in Exodus the same darkness that God claimed to have created?  2. Is the darkness mentioned in Isaiah 45 and Exodus 10 the same darkness that the scientists are theorizing?   3. If it is, what are the implications of these passages for scientists, and for those who believe the Bible to be true?  4. If it is, why can’t the scientists find it and analyze it? ; If it isn’t, then what is the difference between the two concepts---darkness as created by God, and darkness as theorized by scientists?

An acquaintance recently shared another thought that I’m including at this point, but it should probably be put in the beginning of this study for obvious reasons. The thought related to Genesis 1:1-2: In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. The point: How could there be darkness, that could not be seen, before there was light, without which darkness would have no meaning? Also, there would be nobody to see what can't be seen.

Allen,

Here's a specific paper from Creation.com that addresses the variation "problem".

Adam, Eve and Noah vs Modern Genetics

From what I see (as a layman) is that the majority of variation is pre-programmed rather than mutational, so the high mutation rate argument is a red herring.

I ask here because this is pretty much run by AiG.

I don't know, you'd have to search their site or you can email them the question and they might answer it-they've answered some of my questions before.

I don't know much about this at all but what I perceive to be common sense makes me think that since they intermarried freely with siblings and all, mutations probably did build up very quickly. I'm not sure how polygamy would effect this, but it seems like it would help make more mutations as well because all the sons and daughters of one man would be related (step siblings), thereby sharing and making new mutations. I hope that makes sense, and at least somewhat rings true-some things to think about anyway.

on the WP Adam and Eve page is the claim, "It would take an impossibly high mutation rate to account for the observed human genetic variation if all humans descended from two individuals several thousands of years ago as young Earth creationism claims." which comes from "Barbara Bradley Hagerty (August 9, 2011). "Evangelicals Question The Existence Of Adam And Eve". All Things Considered. Transcript."  does AiG have any rebuttal about this?

Speaking of people who believe in Evolution claiming to be Creationists, it is just as absurd for someone who believes in a mere local flood to make the claim that they believe in THE biblical Flood. I find it hard to believe they could honestly endeavor to appropriate the term "The Flood" to apply to a mere local inundation.

It is just as silly for someone who believes that Jesus is less than divine to assert that the "believe in THE Son of God."

I was searching for scriptures with google yesterday, and what to my wondering eyes should appear but...the geometric column! It is a shame how evolutionists can teach/preach evolution without ever saying a word! I think we should start using these techniques to teach/preach creation! =-)

Sara, the answers to your questions about the stars can be found on the creation.com website. Type in "counting the stars' in the search box and you should be able to access a very informative and well presented article by Werner Gitt. Not only will you find your answers but you will stand in awe of the God we worship!
