Hi Tom. Just been awake for a few and just now got online, and your message popped up even as I was reading the posts of the last few hours. A few of my basic opinions on the concept of the Adversary, Satan, Lucifer, etc.  I have to tell you, I've been very impressed at your Bible acumen and how well you articulate your ideas here, and have to say that I agree with the vast majority of what you've propounded here (is that the right word?). Let's start with Isaiah 14 and the one called Lucifer. After re-reading the chapter slowly and thoughtfully as you suggested, I've concluded that you're right____in part. What I get out of the reading is this; which, by the way I've suspected for some little while now; The Hebrew word "hey-lel", translated Lucifer, is the name given to the king of Babylon, presumably Nebuchadnezzar given the time period. Actually, this was probably written a couple-hundred years before he came to power; or at least before he invaded Judah and carried the Israelites into captivity, around 535 B.C. I believe. Isaiah's term as prophet of God ran between circa 750 to 700 B.C. That being said, which is far less relevent, it seems Lucifer is indeed the name given to a man. However, I have come to the conclusion that in as much as these passages are speaking of a man, they are a collorary of both human and heavenly beings. Just as there are dominions, principalities, and powers in this world, so are there spiritual counterparts of the same in heavenly places. Remember Daniel 10: 12-13; the angel tells Daniel that he was dispatched to Daniel's aide as soon as his prayers began, but he was waylayed so to speak by the prince of the kingdom of Persia and was thus engaged for twenty-one days until help arrived in the person of Michael. This angel who is not named, goes on to say he was left alone there with the kings (plural) of Persia. The Apostle Paul reiterates in Romans 8:38 that there is a heavenly heirarchy; powers, principalities and powers. It could get complicated if we let it, but I believe we might easily understand from these passages that there are spiritual forces at work in the lives of not only individuals, but command the lives of world leaders and empires as well. That being said, I believe it imminently possible, if not probable, given the common Hebrew literary device of duality, that this is an indictment of two persons; the humanly king of Babylon, AND the prince or power (of the air?) who governed or governs that particular region at the time. Because Satan is as interested in human affairs as God is (obviously for diametrically opposite reasons), and he, not being able to be everywhere at once as God is, must, by necessity, delegate his nefarious power to his demon generals, lieutenants, govenor's , etc., who can stand watch over, and as much as possible influence the human affairs of their respective pervue of authority.

It is my surmise then that the Isaiah 14 passage is speaking to both Satan (whatever his actual identity is), and Babylon's king. So I believe also is the case of the king of Tyre from Ezekiel. The "watchman" as mentioned before in previous posts' is Ezekiel himself. I don't recall right off hand the full body of that discussion, just thought I'd throw that one in there. Get back as you can, and God bless. Ron

Tom, Thanks for your invite. I, too, like the stimulation of talking about the truth of the Bible. Just wish that there was a way to get my brothers, sister, nieces and nephews and grandchildren to care about Truth.

I had a great weekend with 2 of our grandchildren (aged 6 and 10) - we spent nearly 48 hours with them. It was amazing to see the changes (softer, more at peace) just spending the time with them. We can see it, but the parents don't.

Welcome to C.C. Hope to converse with you in future.

Tom, thanks for the invite. I have not seen your comments on the "Fall" and the "Serpent" so I cannot comment on them. I would be happy to respond. I enjoy these discussions, although I feel inadequate to comment on the level most engage in. Lead me to your comments and I will give it a shot.
