Getting published is hard work and a lot of perseverance. My suggestions are:
1. Hone your craft--read a lot of books on writing and attend writing conferences.

Yes, some of them were online, or referenced in books. The site of the Geological Society of London has a good historical archive as well.

Julie Cave said… - Hi Nick, I am in Brisbane, on the east coast of Australia. Parts of the east coast have daylight savings (AEST) until 3 April. We are not included in this, so we are one hour behind AEST. After 3 April, daylight savings end and we join AEST. This is probably now clear as mud! Hope it helps
