"Actually, Mendel watched genetics at work, and he observed that for a trait to be passed onto offspring it must be present within the parent, barring something like a genetic mutation.  Perhaps this is what you are thinking of?"

"If wings in a parent tend to atrophy due to some genetic cause, then the trait could be passed on to offspring. But if they atrophied due to disuse, then that would not be a trait passed on to successive generations."
